Q: Can I get Major Medical/Surgical, Surgical Only, or Loss of Use coverages by themselves?
A: No. These coverages are only available as endorsements added on to a Full Mortality policy.

Alexandra Vogel

Alexandra Vogel - Switzerland

Q: Do I need to have my veterinarian examine my horse before I can start a policy?

A: To insure for Full Mortality, a veterinary exam is not required as long as your horse is sound and healthy, and you are insuring him for $25,000 or less. If you are insuring for more than $25,000, a basic exam is required.

If you are interested in certain types of Loss of Use coverage, regardless of the horse`s value, you will be required to submit a much more detailed veterinary exam (similar to a pre-purchase exam).

Independent Horse Shows and Events
If you organize horse shows, equestrian events, or clinics, you should consider a commercial liability policy to protect yourself. Coverage is provided for the days the activity takes place, and can also include coverage for a certain number of days for set-up and take-down.

Protect Your Business

A liability policy is one of those things you hope you`ll never need, but if you do, could help save your business and even your reputation. It will help protect you if you are sued by a third party (such as a client, spectator, or passer-by) who is injured or whose property is damaged due to your commercial equestrian activities.

Liability policies provide for defence costs as well as pay claims for which you are legally liable up to the policy limits. Annual policy limits ranging from $300,000 to $1 million or higher are available.

Following are explanations of two types of liability policies that are available for professional equestrians:

Q: What if I’m buying a horse that’s in another country, or I`m traveling with him out of the U.S. for a competition? Will he have coverage while we are abroad and in transit?

A: Full Mortality and Major Medical/Surgical or Surgical Only coverage can be extended while the horse is located in most other countries. Usually all that is required is prior notice as well as an additional premium. Quarantine expenditures are not covered. Ask the agent for more details.

Alexandra North

Alexandra North - USA

Q: Are there any uses/disciplines which do not qualify for coverage?
B A: Race horses, horses in race training, or horses intended to race do not qualify for Major Medical/Surgical or Surgical Only coverage. Your horse’s use and/or intended uses must be stated on the mortality application.

Alexandra Luck

Alexandra Luck - USA

Once upon a time..... there was a little girl that loved ponies.

As a child while living in Beecroft, Lynette Mitchell was lucky enough to live four doors down from where the coloured Australian Pony stallion Cooee lived. All the local girls used to congregate to ride this great natured stallion, this is where Lynette`s love affair with the Australian Pony began.

After improving her riding skills, Lynette`s family purchased for her Beecroft Cooee Lady, also known as Philly. Philly was a difficult pony to ride and taught Lynette a great deal. She feels that her biggest achievement with Philly was teaching her to walk, which took over a year. This was where Lynette`s patience with ponies developed.

At their first show Lynette and Philly won three firsts and one Champion. This was the start of a very long and successful show career.
B After getting married, having a family and moving to acreage at Kellyville, Lynette`s own children became involved with pony club. In 1970 she met Tony Gavan through her husband`s occupation as a farrier. Lynette was invited by Tony to ride the ponies that he had at the time. This followed through to a very successful partnership as Koorana Pony Stud, ending 10 December 1980, when the partnership was dissolved and the ponies were divided. It was after this Koora-Lyn was born.

A member of the APSB Society since 1972, Lynette has been part of the NSW APSB Committee for about 25 years and on NSW ASP Committee since 2000. Lynette is on both NSW and Federal Judges panels and on several occasions been invited to judge in ACT, Vic, Qld & WA. Locally she has judged a variety of different breeds and saddle classes, even Donkeys at Sydney Royal.

Barolin Angwyn is one of the best performed and most consistent ponies in the last thirty years, his awards are too numerous to mention. In addition to many local show successes, Angwyn`s most notable achievements include Supreme Australian Pony at Sydney Royal in 1981, 1984, 1985, 1986 and for nine consecutive years (1979-1987) Champion Australian Pony Stallion at Castle Hill Show. Angwyn was awarded Supreme Australian Pony at 1980 National Stud Show, Champion Stallion 12.2-14h and Champion Ridden Stallion on numerous occasions.

Due to the urban sprawl that has occurred in recent times, in 1999 the Koora-Lyn Ponies relocated to the picturesque hills of North Richmond. They are now enjoying the fresh air, varied bird life and swimming in the dam. The new property is also the final resting place for Angwyn who died in 2000, aged 26.

Lynette has always maintained a well-planned breeding programme taking into consideration future generations, even if the progeny is sold or gelded. The stud now consists of 3 stallions, 19 breeding mares and 8 youngsters plus foals. Koora-Lyn Ponies have consistently been shown with great success in Led and under saddle, not only in Australian Pony classes but also in other breeds and open company. Many Koora-Lyn Ponies have been competing in Pony Dressage for several years with geldings Koora-Lyn Moonfire and Koora-Lyn Sunrise leading the way. Sunrise has been competing against the bigger dressage horses and beating them. Many children ride Koora-Lyn ponies when competing in school competitions for dressage, eventing and jumping. Koora-Lyn Storytale is only 12.3h and has competed successfully in eventing, often showing the bigger ponies and horses what he is made of.

In December 2010, Koora-Lyn celebrated 30 years since being established in 1980. In that time 178 stallions and mares have been registered in APSB studbooks Vol 13 to 24.

Several Ways To Introduce Social Media To Your Marketing Team

Yesterday I read a great blog post. Mike VanDervort’s Confronting Social Media at Work. It warns HR professionals about the need to get ready for the social media invasion. Those who left comments about the post asked “how do you communicate the importance of social media to a leadership group that has no concept of its relevance in their personal or professional lives?” This is a question I see more and more as businesses start to use these tools. So how do you get leadership, co-workers, or employees to buy into this social media thing. I just so happen to come up with an answer.

1. Educate.

Supply information. There are many sources of information available that explain what social media tools are in quick and entertaining ways. Articles from trade publications are incredibly helpful since they are coming from a source that you may already know and respect. When you find these articles flip the publication open to that page, attach a sticky note saying “thought you would find this interesting,” and leave it for them on their desk. Remember to follow up personally to see if they liked the article or had any questions. It is important to give the article that personal touch. It shows that you think the content is important enough to go out of your way to highlight it. For this to be effective you can’t just send them a link to an article online.

However if you want to leverage your online resources (and as some one interested in social media, I would assume you would) you can also direct your team’s attention to some online videos. Video hits a much different cord with people than an article. Done correctly a video can provide a great deal of useful information much quicker than in an article.

2. Find other businesses using it

Find others like yourself that are interested in the opportunities that social media provides and engage in some thoughtful conversations about how utilizing these tools could impact your organization. Once you have a chance to vocalize your thoughts with people that are supportive of the technology, it will be easier to have similar conversations with those that still haven’t seen the light.

3. Use social media solutions

When you are discussion solutions to meet your training needs look for opportunities to add a social media component. Here are a few examples:

Instead of learners taking a test or writing papers to show their competence ask them to make a five minute video on the topic. Create a forum so new employees can post questions and get feedback from their coworkers as they learn the ropes in their new company. When starting a new product or service, create a blog to make sure each employee is kept up to date on any developments. This kind of constant communication will reduce the amount of information they will need to learn through formal training sessions when the product or service is ready to launch.

The next time a group of people attend a conference ask that they post any insights they gather on their Twitter accounts and assign them a hashtag for your company. You’ll be able to get three main things out of this. First, this will allow the attendees one more way to network with people at the conference, give them the ability to share their knowledge with the colleagues back at the office in real time, and in the end you will be able to get a sense for the ROI on the conference. 4. Reduce the marketing budget by using a “free” option!

Most of the social media tools out there are free. Alright, so not all social media solutions are free, but in these hard economic times spending a few hundred dollars is better than spending hundreds of thousands of dollars.

5. Check out the competition.

In your searches through those articles from the first bullet point did you find one highlighting your competition? This is a great opportunity to spotlight both the reach of social media and how it can be used in your industry. For example an article was just published by ASTD entitled Twitter: Inside the Enterprise, Up the Next Hill by Marcia Conner. It talks about how employees at Humana are using Twitter to enhance social learning.

6. Invite coworkers to connect with you on social networks.

So they don’t know what Linked In is? Then introduce them personally! Send an invitation to you colleagues and ask them to join your online network. The key to making this work is to follow up with them in person. Make sure they got your invitation and take a minute to share some of your experiences with them. If you want them to take advantage of social media remember that it is just like any social gathering, it is easier to walk into the room when you already know somebody there.

7. Give the gift of social media.

With the holidays at hand this is a perfect time to get in the giving mood (even if it does have a bit of a hidden agenda). As I mentioned before there are many resources available on the evolution of social media. Present your boss, co-workers, or employees with a copy of the latest book to get their wheels turning. A few books come to mind as perfect introductions to the topic. I have placed some of these books on my virtual bookshelf located on the right hand sidebar. Grown Up Digital: How the Net Generation is Changing Your World HC by Don Tapscott is a research based book looking at the effect of technology on Millennials (those born between 1977 – 1997). The book discusses how their brains process information differently than previous generations, as well as ways to attract and educate this audience. I also recommend Bernie Borges’ book Marketing 2.0: Bridging the Gap between Seller and Buyer through Social Media Marketing as it is a great social media resource even if you aren’t involved in marketing.

These tips should provide your team with a pretty good introduction to social media. Hopefully they start to understand that social media isn’t so “crazy” after all. Then again, when the Internet first hit the mainstream people considered that crazy (and we all know how that one worked out).

P.S. Have you already had the “social media conversation” with your team. If so leave a comment and let me know how it went!

Care, Custody and Control
If you are responsible for the care of horses you do not own, such as boarding, training, or breeding, you should consider Care, Custody and Control (CCC) coverage. If one of those horses is injured or dies while in your care and the owner believes you were negligent and sues you, this policy will provide for the medical care or replacement cost of the horse up to the policy limits. It also will pay your defence fees. You can purchase this coverage alone, or add it to your CEL policy.

Ard Patrick is a Dutch Warmblood. He has been inspected by the Irish Horse Board and given S1 status.

Ard Patrick (named Patrick on his KWPN papers) has beautiful paces and very good jumping ability. As Heather rides him, his time spent under saddle has been very periodic, if at all!. This year (2003) is the first time he has been in work properly with the intention to compete so he is a very green 6 year old.

A young ’STER’ graded mare, a recognition given to high quality mares in Holland. (more information to come later)

Just like his Dad Mirah Mania has the most wonderful temperament you could ever wish for.

Guide To Retweeting On Twitter

“Retweeting” is described as copying a twitter message another person posted, and rebroadcasting it to your followers. When sending this message, you should always provide “RT username” to give credit to the person who posted the message first. While retweeting appears like a wonderful thing for the main tweeter (because their link is involved), retweeting will help you just as much if not more.

How You Should Retweet

Prior to getting into the usefulness of retweeting, it may be a good idea for you to know how to properly retweet. The common prefix for a retweet is “RT:” – the label “Retweeting:” and “Reading:” work as well. Next comes the original “posters” name. Another option that is often used is when you credit the original poster by simply using the @reply, for example: “@originalPoster”. Furthermore, you should put the link along with a quick note about the link and why it is relevant. Here is an example of retweeting: “RT: @originalPoster Ultimate Twitter Marketing Tool https://bit.ly/fxA2dI“. Now you understand how to correctly retweet.

Retweet Interesting and Relevant Posts

The natural reaction many people have is that if you retweet another individual’s posts, then there is a greater chance that the original poster will retweet your content in the future. This doesn’t primairly hold true, you should not retweet everyone’s post for your own personal gain. You must pick and choose when you retweet since the reason why you are doing this is to benefit your followers.

Retweeting Helps Your Followers

There is a reason why people follow you, value. When you give something of value to your followers you will not only make them happy, but you will most likely attract more followers. Providing good quality content is certainly a great way to give your followers a reason to look forward to your tweets. I usually like to write up a great blog post, and link the post in a tweet. Even though this is one way to approach it, it is not the only way. Another way is to link to a great article or site you find online.

Retweeting Will Help You

Retweeting builds your business and personal brand as well as your follower’s loyalty. When you point a reader to information that is not your own that is truly relevant and beneficial to them, the amount of trust that individual has in you will increase. The next time you post a link, whether it be to yours or to another source, the chances of that individual clicking that link are higher than before.

Retweeting Build Relationships With Original Posters

The chance of being on the receieving end of a retweet increases as you retweet. I’m not saying you should expect someone to retweet your content just because you retweet theirs. Again, retweeting is all about providing value to your followers, and an individual isn’t going to retweet a post of yours if it is not top notch.

Does Retweeting Steer Your Followers Away From You?

No. Retweeting will never lose you followers or readers unless you send them to some sort of spam. Why would someone stop reading your tweets or following you on twitter because you posted someone else tweet via retweet? Keep an open mind when it comes to your readers, they are usually smart and good people.

Conclusion

Retweeting is a great way to add quality and value to your Twitter. If used incorrectly retweeting can actually hurt your business and personal brand and future traffic. If done right, retweeting can help you educate your followers, build your brand, increase future traffic, and connect you to others in your niche.
